Passage to India
A multi-award winning restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh, Passage to India has been given the AAA Award of Excellence twice and achieved Outstanding Achievement mentions from the Good Eating Guide for four years. It’s the only restaurant in town to serve Punjabi cuisine but this isn’t the only thing that sets Passage to India apart from the crowd – this is a restaurant where every single thing is imbued with a sense of quality and care, from the interior design to the service. Balanced between 70s style flock wallpapered palaces and ultra modern starkly conceived dining rooms, Passage to India has an unusually tongue in cheek style, the furnishings simple and unfussy but the art on the walls, depicting typical Indian scenes kitsch and colourful. This creativity follows through to the food, inspired by the flavours of the Punjab with a menu that includes less often tasted Indian dishes as well as a few old favourites.

The Raj on The Shore
A quirky, popular Indian restaurant near the Britannia Yacht and overlooking the Shore at Leith, Edinburgh's historic seaport. The Raj theme extends from the soldier figurines and British flag behind the exotic blue bar to the predominantly Bangladeshi/North Indian menu. Appropriately for the location, there's a selection of Goan and seafood specialties. Among the best house specials are a gorgeous amere murgh; chicken cooked with fresh mango and mild spices, finished with cream and flaked almonds, and aromatic chicken. The latter is one of 14 dishes created by winners of the International Indian Chef of the Year, an annual cook-off organised by Raj's entrepreneurial owner, Tommy Miah. A weekday business crowd gives way to families and friends on Saturdays and Sundays. A place to go with friends more than a loved one.

Open for lunch and dinner, The Spice Pavilion attracts a well-heeled crowd of art lovers, and the interior – a modern space inspired by the rich colours of colonial India – is a stylish choice for both leisurely or business lunches and a romantic spot for evening meals. The kitchen’s philosophy is to take away the focus from heat and shift it to herbs and spices, giving the curries at The Spice Pavilion lovely fresh flavours which are complimented by an impressive range of wines from Australia and Italy.
