The Bread Street Brasserie The Bread Street Brasserie is a sophisticated contemporary dining room situated alongside Edinburgh’s gorgeous Point Hotel. Though a part of the chic boutique style hotel, The Bread Street Brasserie is a favourite venue all of its own, having earned a reputation as one of the city’s best spots for relaxed, unpretentious dining. Designed with one eye on fashion and another on comfort, the Brasserie strikes that hard to find balance between style and substance, appealing equally to urban stylistas and food fans. Service is discrete and obliging while also feeling friendly and welcoming, the staff obviously used to dealing with such a varied clientele, which includes local businessmen and the jet setting residents of the Point. Typically Modern European, The Bread Street Brasserie menu includes excellent steaks, creative British dishes and a very good selection of vegetarian and gluten free dishes that don’t for a moment scrimp on flavour. The Brasserie’s sibling, the Monboddo Bar is a perfect post-dining choice, serving delectable cocktails created by inventive resident mixologists. The Charleston Restaurant Located inside Edinburgh’s Gala Maybury Casino, The Charleston Restaurant is a lively and elegant brasserie that is always filled with a fun crowd. Modern with Deco touches, the restaurant is the perfect place to celebrate your luck at the roulette table and The Charleston also attracts locals who love to pop by for a hearty meal. The menu is a classic collection of European dishes, and we love the venison Wellington wrapped in a mushroom and bacon duxelle and pastry served with pickled red sweet cabbage and kirsch jus; the sea bass served with a robust anise and sweet pepper, roasted fennel and Pernod sauce; and the bread and butter pudding with rum and raisin ice cream for dessert. The Living Room No expense has been spared on Edinburgh’s Living Room restaurant, one of a clutch of popular style bars lining George Street. The décor has been described as "Manhattan loft with a colonial twist”, a pretty fair description of the chic, upbeat, welcoming atmosphere at The Living Room. There’s a lot of stylish wood, substantial brown leather armchairs, potted plants and sophisticated lighting. A slick entrance bar, brought alive most evenings by one of a superb roster of resident jazz pianist performing on a white baby grand, leads to a cavernous dining space where the balance between comfort and style is reflected in The Living Room's modern European menu. It ranges from snacks, salads and roasts (Sundays only) to comfort food classics and more ambitious pasta, grill and seafood dishes. Edinburgh diners love the international wine list and the sexy cocktails and absolutely everyone praises the service to the skies. The Pompadour Historic French glamour comes to Scotland in the shape of The Pompadour, main restaurant of Edinburgh’s renowned Caledonian Hilton Hotel. Taking its name from Jeanne Antoinette or, as she’s more commonly known, Madame de Pompadour, the restaurant, which dates all the way back to 1925, has the kind of extravagantly regal beauty commonly associated with the famed courtesan. Although the interior is truly spectacular, with its lavish scrolls and swags, looking beyond the curvaceous windows you’ll find unrivalled views of Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street. Though French in name, The Pompadour takes a more local approach to food with Executive Chef Kenny Coltman designing menus with a focus on Scottish produce and seasonal eating. The result is a delicious dining experience proving that North of the Border cuisine is just as creative and inspired as its more widely recognised Continental brothers and sisters. Afternoon teas are a decadent treat at The Pompadour too with several options, including the family friendly Children’s Tea, available daily. The Shore Situated on the Leith waterfront, The Shore is the ideal destination for those wishing to spend an evening in Edinburgh’s historic port. Boats line the harbourside where the sun sets slowly on hot summer nights, making The Shore a quiet and idyllic location: perfect for a relaxing evening and an intimate meal. The ambience is warm and charming, enhanced by the traditional and candlelit décor of informal 18th century wood panelling, huge mirrors and real fires. The cuisine fuses classic British dishes with a modern European twist; we love the pecan-crusted fillet of ostrich, served with blue cheese dauphinoise potatoes and green beans. After dinner, head to the bar, where live entertainment is provided most evenings by local jazz and folk musicians. Cuisine: Modern European Location: 3 Shore, Leith, Edinburgh, EH6 6QW [Map] |
